The Make-a-Wish Foundation, Maxwell Special needs community and schools from Montgomery County took the opportunity to give children from the region a special sneak-peek at the upcoming air show today.

The students were brought to the flight line and surrounding hangars to see several static aircraft displays and informational booths focusing on STEM (science, technology engineering and math). More than 20 aircraft were on display including a C-5 Galaxy and A-10 Thuinderbolt (Warthog).

“Having the airplanes open and available for the kids to learn how they work and what they do, is a great way for them to experience what their families get to experience, or their sponsors get to experience on a day to day basis,” said Nerissa Keeler, 42nd Medical Group Educational and Developmental Intervention Services program manager.

Among the many static displays and information booths, many different branches of military from throughout the U.S. were present.

“This is a great opportunity for these kids to come out here and see what we do,” said 433rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Crew Chief Tech. Sgt. Luis Ortegon, from Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. “It’s a good head start for them to plan for their future.”

Many of the children who attended the event had the chance to see the Air Force Thunderbirds. They received autographs and photos with the Thunderbirds.

“This day is wonderful, because it enables these kids to have the same experience as others,” Keeler said. “It lets them know that they have the ability to do anything that they apply themselves to.”
