The Maxwell Club is changing its focus to create a comfortable environment for all Airmen, of any rank, to enjoy.

As a part of that initiative, club managers are giving units from Maxwell and Gunter Annex an opportunity to personalize their own ceiling tiles in an area known as The Pit.

“The sign in front of the building reads ‘Maxwell Club’,” said Col. Donald Lewis, 42nd Mission Support Group commander. “We want the Airmen of Maxwell to know this is their club, and we want to create that feeling of ownership.”

Managers began the initiative in March to see how many units would participate.

“Starting with the wing seemed logical, and participation was good,” Lewis said. “We have some talented and creative artists out there.”

The 10 squadrons that have participated so far are within the 42nd Air Base Wing. Others are encouraged to participate, including Air University classes, such as Squadron Officer School, as well as other mission partners on base.

“The Pit is the place where we can let our hair down and blow off some steam,” Lewis said. “There’s nothing formal about the place, and I think our Airmen like that about The Pit.”

Part of the initiative is to give the several Airmen that come and go a place to leave their mark at Maxwell.

The Pit is only the beginning for these ceiling tiles to be placed to carry on an Air Force tradition, and expected to continue to grow, Lewis said.
