Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., hosted more than 70 international chiefs of defense today at Fort Belvoir, Virginia to discuss countering violent extremist organizations worldwide.

During the conference, the senior military leaders discussed the current threats generated by violent extremist organizations as well as the importance of partnerships, alliances, and increased communication to identify, counter, and defeat those threats.

Throughout the conference, Dunford highlighted the continued need for unity of effort as well as for improved cooperation and collaboration to counter violent extremism.

“This conference was a success in that we were able to gather more than 70 chiefs of defense from around the world for open, frank discussion on a range of topics related to violent extremism and the transregional threat it poses,” said Dunford. “Their participation was a clear indication of the international community’s commitment to countering the influence and impact violent extremism can have on the world.”

This was the second Joint Staff-sponsored counter-violent extremist organizations conference and the largest to date. The first was held Oct. 16, 2016 at Joint Base Andrews, Md., and hosted approximately 40 chiefs of defense.
