Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., hosted Chairman of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Kyeong-doo Jeong, and Japanese Chief of Staff Adm. Katsutoshi Kawano for a trilateral meeting Oct. 29 at U.S. Pacific Command Headquarters in Hawaii.

Joining Dunford were Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Harry B. Harris; Commander, United Nations Command/U.S. Forces Korea, Gen. Vincent Brooks; and Commander, U.S. Forces Japan, Lt. Gen. Jerry Martinez.

The session was the fifth between the senior-most U.S., ROK, and Japanese military officers since July 2014 and featured discussions on trilateral cooperation that responds to increasingly provocative North Korean nuclear and missile threats, and promotes long-term peace and stability in northeast Asia.

They exchanged views on North Korea's recent long range ballistic missile and nuclear tests, including two missile launches over Japan's Hokkaido Island, reconfirmed the tests were flagrant violations of U.N. Security Council resolutions, and agreed to firmly respond to the acts in full coordination with each other.

The three leaders discussed multilateral and trilateral initiatives designed to improve interoperability and readiness. They agreed to explore their collective capabilities in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief as well as leveraging their unique competencies in the cyber domain, further operationalizing the 2016 General Security of Military Information Agreement.

Together they called upon North Korea to "refrain from irresponsible provocations that aggravate regional tensions, and to walk away from its destructive and reckless path of WMD development."

Dunford reaffirmed the ironclad commitment of the U.S. to defend both the ROK and Japan and provide extended deterrence guaranteed by the full spectrum of U.S. military capabilities, including conventional, nuclear, and missile defense.

The senior military leaders agreed to continue working together to further mutual security issues in order to enhance peace and stability in the region.
