Air University is set to start its first class of the Civilian Associate of Applied Science in Air Force Leadership and Management Studies program in March.

Offered through the Eaker Center’s Force Support Professional Development School, the course was created in order to help Air Force civilians achieve their full leadership potential.

This course leverages technology in order to provide students around the globe with a world-class education, said Barry Waite, chief of the Civilian Workforce Development Division. This fits with Air Education and Training Command’s 2018 strategic plan.

Classes are completed online through the Adobe Connect software, which eliminates the distance between the student and professor and gives them the opportunity to interact in real-time.

“We will teach 10 distance learning courses from the school,” said Waite. “The courses are nine weeks long, and we will offer five terms each year, so students can complete the entire degree program in as little as two years.”

Courses consist of scheduled online live classes along with out-of-class readings and assignments. All other coursework can be done during evenings or weekends, whatever works best for the student’s schedule.

“Thanks to the convenience of this program, I am now able to work towards completing my degree,” said Nereyda Salas, administrative assistant for the 76th Aircraft Maintenance Group commander at Tinker Air Force base, Oklahoma. “I look forward to new doors opening for my career.”

For those interested in the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Status as a permanent full-time appropriated fund Air Force civilian at any grade level

  • Two years of federal civil service by the application deadline

  • Acceptable rating on most recent performance appraisal

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent (May have some college credit, but must NOT have been awarded a post-secondary degree from a regionally accredited 2 or 4-year institution)

  • Supervisor coordination with agreement to provide access to a government computer and up to 3 hours per week of duty time for class attendance (subject to mission requirements)
