Air Command and Staff College conducted its "Community Service Day" Dec. 12, 2008. Over four hundred officers and many of their spouses participated in service projects from Prattville to Tuskegee.

The goal was to have each flight to volunteer at least three hours to assist local organizations and activities in accomplishing much-needed repairs, donating goods, and providing additional workers. This was an opportunity for students to help the greater Montgomery and Central Alabama communities.

Officers volunteered their services as part of their respective flight/seminar's participation to respective community events. Two flights helped the Montgomery Zoo get ready for their Christmas light show by raking leaves and removing logs and branches.

Five seminars helped Goodwill Industries and the Salvation Army sort their warehouses, collect toys for the Angel Tree (over 200 items for 74 children), or distributing donations. Five other flights assisted local YMCAs and local humane societies/animal shelters.

Another flight participated by painting with the local Habitat for Humanity. A local outreach group in Montgomery received help from three flights and another seminar collected canned goods/money and delivered the food to a local shelter.

Additionally, several flights traveled throughout Central Alabama to provide their community service. Three seminars went to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee and visited the long-term residents as well as homeless and drug-treatment patients. Additionally, they also donated over $400 in toiletry items for the VA.

Four flights travelled to Wetumpka. Two helped with construction projects at the Elmore Black History Museum and another two participated with the Adullam House orphanage by donating for the children and performing yard work and construction projects.

According to the students, the event proved to be worthwhile for them and the community.
