On February 14, 1943, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, commander of the German Afrika Korps in North Africa, launched a major offensive against Allied positions at the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, North Africa. Within days, the rapid advance of the Afrika Korps, supported by German aircraft, nearly overran the entire Allied position, including several forward airfields, in Tunisia. This battle became the first major defeat of U.S. forces in Africa.

The son of a British service member made a point to stop at Maxwell on June 15 on a tour of the states to see where his father trained during World War II. Edwin Norton, from Norton Fitzwarren, England, took a nostalgic tour of Maxwell to see some of the places that his father, Edgar John Norton, probably saw when he was at then-Gunter Field as a Royal Air Force flight cadet for flight training during the war.

The event, now serving as a capstone for the ACSC curriculum, invited these prominent speakers to share their stories of courage, perseverance and innovation with the officers and civilians attending the school in an effort to inspire today’s military leaders to achieve greatness in support of their country.
