Dress & Appearance Standards for Inbound COT Officers

All COT officers MUST report to training in conservative civilian clothes.  Uniforms are not authorized for wear the day of your arrival. 

The following lists some items that would be considered inappropriate to wear as civilian clothing during training (including arrival day):

  • Sandals or similarly inappropriate footwear
  • Yoga pants, leggings, tight pants/shorts, or shorts that are shorter than fingertip length when arms are down at sides
  • T-shirts with offensive slogans/sayings, nudity, profanity, or tobacco/alcohol endorsements
  • Shirts that expose the midriff, or that are excessively tight
  • Any clothing that exposes undergarments

Upon arrival and throughout training, all trainees will be expected to adhere to the dress & appearance standards defined in AFI 36-2903.

OCP UNIFORM UPDATE

 

 

As of 1 October 2018, wear of the OCP uniform is authorized for students as a utility uniform in place of the ABU. At a minimum, the US flag MUST be worn per the AFI on the OCP uniform. These uniform items will not be available for purchase until the following year.

 


UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS 


You are encouraged to purchase all of your required uniform items before arriving to COT/RCOT.  All uniform items you are unable to pre-purchase will be available for purchase after arrival. However, if you do, ensure you ask for assistance from AAFES staff regarding proper fit and wear of uniform items. The Maxwell AFB AAFES will not accept returns or exchange items that have been worn or altered.


One method of obtaining uniforms before you arrive is through the AAFES online store.


You may pay for your uniform items by:

  • Master Card, Visa, or Discover (no American Express)
  • Personal check, travelers’ check, or cash
  • Military Star credit card—For uniforms only: a maximum of $500 with no interest. For all military shopping: maximum limit based on credit check with a variable interest rate. Card can be obtained before arrival or application can be initiated during in-processing.

You are encouraged to pre-purchase boots and low quarters to allow sufficient "break-in" time to ensure proper fit. 

You may have your rank sewn on or use the subdued pin-on rank on your ABU shirt/hat.

 

In addition to uniforms, there are several other items you will need. You may bring them with you, or you may purchase them when you arrive. All of the items below can be purchased at the Base Exchange (BX) or Shoppette (within walking distance of OTS campus):

 
  • Shower shoes
  • Bath towels
  • Black backpack
  • Laundry bag
  • Laundry marker
  • Pens/pencils
  • Alarm clock
 
  • Notebook
  • Highlighters
  • Razor
  • Hangers
  • Small/medium plastic bins
  • Undergarments
  • Running Shoes
 
  • Hair product
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Shaving gear
  • Female Care products
  • Deodorant


The flashlight and the plastic rubbermaid container must be standardized within the COT Class, so we highly recommend you wait to purchase those when you arrive at Maxwell AFB.

It is also recommended that you bring an old pair of tennis shoes to wear to events where your footwear could get wet. You do not need to purchase a second pair if you do not have an old pair.


COLD WEATHER GEAR (OCTOBER - MARCH CLASSES)


Trainees should plan accordingly and should strongly consider purchasing the optional cold-weather uniform accessories if attending COT classes during the months of October-March.  Optional items include, but are not limited to those found in AFI 36-2903.

Although optional, these items are highly encouraged. These are items that can be purchased commercially and worn under various uniform combinations while attending training during the cold weather months of October - March.  

 

HAIR STANDARDS 

Male and female trainees should arrive with haircuts adhering to AFI 36-2903 standards.  Refer to pages 17-21 in the link.

Males should arrive clean shaven.  Facial hair is not authorized during training.  Males who require hair cuts during training will have access to barbershop facilities on base. 

 

EYEGLASS / CONTACT LENSES 


Eyeglasses/contacts worn at OTS must comply with the standards described in AFI 36-2903. Click on the link and review paragraph 6.3.2 for eyeglass/contact lens wear. You are allowed to wear contact lenses during training, however, there are some field events that DO NOT allow the wear of contact lenses.  Please make sure you have a suitable pair of eyeglasses, with eyeglass straps, for these events. 

Transition lenses are not authorized in formation. Ensure you bring a pair of transition free glasses with you to training.

 

CIVILIAN CLOTHING 


Throughout the duration of your training you will be required to wear Blues, ABUs or PT gear unless you are exercising off-campus privileges on the weekend.  If you are unsure what conservative means, please refer to the notes at the top of this page.
