Joint Press Statement/Post-Luncheon Read-out of Phone Call Between CJCS and Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford had lunch with the Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano at the Pentagon today.


General Dunford and Admiral Kawano expressed their gratitude for the deep-rooted alliance between Japan and the U.S., and the mutual trust and understanding built between the two militaries.

“I enjoyed meeting with Adm. Kawano and reaffirmed the close bonds between our militaries and commitment to our long-time ally Japan,” Gen. Dunford said after lunch.  “I also thanked him and the men and women of the Self Defense Forces and Coast Guard for their prompt assistance to the USS FITZGERALD following her collision at sea.”

Both leaders agreed to continue to explore ways to further an already strong alliance and friendship.
